A walk along breathtaking nature

Your adventure begins as soon as you are picked up at your accommodation and taken to the starting point in Mto wa Mbu. From there you will hike north at the foot of the impressive Great Rift Valley, through a lush agricultural area where as many as thirty different varieties of bananas are grown. Large banana leaves provide natural, cooling shade along the way.

During the hike you will visit some local farms and get a fascinating insight into the traditional irrigation techniques that make this verdant landscape possible. Then a short but vigorous climb of about twenty minutes awaits you to the top of Balaa Hill, literally translated “the hill of misfortune.” But rest assured, it is safe and a beautiful hike.

Arriving at the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the fertile oasis of Mto wa Mbu, shimmering Lake Manyara and the vast Maasai Steppe beyond. At the summit, your guide will share the mysterious story behind the name of this special place.
