Why do so many travelers choose a vacation to Tanzania?

Tanzania has everything people imagine when they think of a trip to Africa. The country is known for spectacular safaris, the beautiful Maasai culture, impressive nature reserves and excellent opportunities to see wildlife in its natural habitat.

Many travelers choose a vacation to Tanzania because of:

  • the Great Migration in Serengeti National Park;
  • high chances of seeing the Big Five;
  • the famous Ngorongoro Crater;
  • vast national parks;
  • private tours with a personal guide;
  • various safari options for every budget;
  • Mount Kilimanjaro, the roof of Africa;
  • the friendly and hospitable people.

It is precisely this combination of wildlife, nature, culture and well-organized itineraries that makes Tanzania a destination many travelers dream of for years.

“What an unforgettable trip through Tanzania! Thanks to guide David (‘Google’) we not only discovered the Big Five, but also learned SO much about nature and culture. A magical experience full of special encounters, beautiful landscapes and warm hospitality. Asante sana!”

Which Tanzania vacation is right for you?

Every traveler experiences Tanzania in a different way. That’s why we always take your preferences, travel companions, available travel time and budget into account.

First Time in Tanzania

For a first visit, we usually recommend the Northern Circuit. This itinerary includes visits to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park.

Safari Vacation in Tanzania

A safari vacation in Tanzania is all about wildlife, nature and unique accommodations. You’ll travel with a guide through national parks, go on game drives and discover how varied the landscapes are from one region to the next.

Fully Customized

Do you want maximum freedom? Then a private safari in Tanzania is often the best choice. You’ll travel with your own guide and set the pace of the trip together.

Affordable Safaris

A shared safari offers the opportunity to experience a safari at a lower cost because you share the jeep with other travelers.

Our Recommended Trip Length for Tanzania

For a first trip to Tanzania, we usually recommend 12 to 14 days. This gives you plenty of time to visit several national parks without the trip feeling rushed.

A shorter trip of 7 to 10 days is also possible, but the focus is often on a more compact itinerary. If you have more time, you can plan your safari at a more leisurely pace and possibly expand it to include additional nature reserves, cultural excursions or a few days of relaxation on the coast.

How much does a vacation to Tanzania cost?

The price of a Tanzania vacation depends on various factors, such as trip duration, season, accommodations, type of safari, and your desired level of comfort.

Safari type Starting at Best for
Shared safari €2,000 Travelers who want to share costs
Compact safari €1,500 Travelers who want a safari experience without too much travel between locations
Extensive safari €2,500 Travelers who want to visit as many highlights as possible
Luxury custom safari €4,000 Travelers who want extra time and luxury to relax on safari

We tailor every trip personally. That way, you’ll always receive a proposal that matches your preferences, travel dates, and budget.

Tanzania or Kenya: What’s the Difference?

Many travelers are torn between Tanzania and Kenya. Both countries offer impressive safaris, but the experience differs.

  • Tanzania has vast nature reserves and longer safari routes.
  • The Serengeti is the main setting for the Great Migration.
  • The Northern Circuit is ideal for a first safari.
  • Kenya often has shorter distances between its most famous parks.

For travelers seeking an extensive safari vacation with plenty of nature, wildlife and famous parks, Tanzania is an excellent choice.

Northern Tanzania or Southern Tanzania?

Most travelers visit Northern Tanzania, where many of the country’s most famous national parks are located relatively close to one another. Southern Tanzania offers a more remote and exclusive safari experience with fewer visitors and a stronger wilderness feel.

Region Parks Highlights
Northern Tanzania Serengeti National Park,
Ngorongoro Crater,
Tarangire National Park
Fewer visitors
Ideal for a tour through multiple parks
Southern Tanzania Nyerere National Park,
Selous Game Reserve
More of a wilderness feel

For a first trip to Tanzania, we usually recommend Northern Tanzania. Travelers who have been on safari before often choose Southern Tanzania for its quieter atmosphere and more off-the-beaten-path experience.

Tanzania’s Most Beautiful National Parks

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is one of the world’s most famous nature reserves. The park is known for the Great Migration, large predators, and endless savannas. For many travelers, the Serengeti is the absolute highlight of their Tanzania vacation.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Thanks to its unique ecosystem, you’ll have excellent opportunities to spot various animal species in a short amount of time. In addition, the Ngorongoro Crater is the perfect place to complete the Big Five, as you’re more likely to see the black rhinoceros here!

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is known for its large elephant population and iconic baobab trees. Especially during the dry season, many animals gather around the river.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara offers a varied landscape with forests, open plains, and a large lake that attracts many bird species. There are even tree-climbing lions here! The park is often included at the beginning or end of a route through northern Tanzania.

Nyerere National Park & Selous Game Reserve

Nyerere National Park and Selous Game Reserve are located in southern Tanzania and offer a different kind of safari experience. Fewer visitors, plenty of space, and a stronger sense of unspoiled nature.

Which mountains can you climb in Tanzania?

Kilimanjaro

At 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Every year, adventurous travelers come to Tanzania to attempt the climb to its iconic summit.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is located near Arusha and rises to 4,566 meters. It is often used as preparation for Kilimanjaro but is also a rewarding trek in its own right. The mountain appeals to travelers looking to combine an active hiking experience with a safari in Northern Tanzania.

Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano located near Lake Natron. Known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai people, it offers a challenging climb and spectacular views. This trek is particularly suited to travelers seeking a more adventurous and less-traveled experience.

Combining a Tanzania Vacation with a Beach Getaway

Many travelers choose to end their Tanzania vacation with a few days of relaxation on the coast or on one of the islands off the mainland. After several days of safari, this creates a rewarding balance between adventure and relaxation.

If you’d like to combine your safari with a beach vacation, we’ll help create a logical itinerary that takes travel times, domestic flights and the overall pace of the journey into account. For a detailed overview of this combination, visit our page about Tanzania and Zanzibar tours.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is a great destination to visit year-round. The best time for you depends on your preferences, itinerary and expectations.

Month Characteristics
January–February Warm, dry and excellent for safaris
March–May Green season with more rain
June–August Warm, dry and peak season
September–November Quieter, perfect for wildlife and nature
December Popular travel month

During the dry months, animals tend to gather more frequently around water sources. In greener periods, the landscapes are more lush and peaceful. The best time to travel therefore depends on what matters most to you during your vacation in Tanzania.

Is Tanzania safe?

Tanzania is visited by many travelers every year. On an organized safari, you’ll travel with experienced local guides who know the areas and conditions well.

As with any trip to a distant destination, we recommend that you prepare thoroughly in advance and consult up-to-date travel information. Be sure to check out our travel information for Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Can I have my Tanzania vacation customized?

We take into account factors such as:

  • trip duration;
  • budget;
