What does ‘safari’ mean?
We are often asked on our safaris what the word “safari” actually stands for and where it comes from. In fact, many people think it means spotting wildlife in a nature park.
The word “safari” comes from Swahili (the main language of Tanzania) and means: Long journey / Traveling from A to B.
Originally, this word also derives from the Arabic word سفر (safar), which means journey.
The word ”safari” used to be used primarily as a term for hunters. They then went hunting for big game alone or accompanied by natives. The shot game was then (partly) taken back and displayed as a hunting trophy. Nowadays, fortunately, the meaning is a lot different and mainly refers to drives through African game parks. Also, the animals are no longer actually shot but only beautiful pictures of the animals.
